Bouroullec knit upholstery collection 2014

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have crafted a knitted upholstery collection for Kvadrat consisting of three tactile designs, which project a strong sense of volume and depth: Canal, Gravel and Moraine. Designed to introduce a new understanding of textile material, all are constructed using a double jersey knit. In designing the collection, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec focused on creating textiles that derive sensual surfaces from their internal structures. Consequently, during their development process they focused on exploring construction as opposed to ‘aesthetic statements’.

All the textiles in the collection offer good multi-directional stretchability and comfort.  The knitted front layer of the textiles is made from fine melange wool and polyester yarns, which combines dark and light fibres. This ensures that they have a sensuous touch and feature a rich play of warm, delicate and irregular colour nuances. The knitted back layer is made from unicoloured polyester yarns, in accent colours. These provide firmness and structure, as well as an eye-catching contrast with the wool.

To produce the patterns of the textiles, thick polyester threads are inserted between the two knitted layers, which are interlocked by knitting the back to the front layer. As a result of this construction, all the designs reveal elements of their internal structure on their surfaces. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec designed the colourways for Canal, Moraine and Gravel to create ‘alive surfaces with intense depth of tones’.

In doing so, they matched colours to yarn qualities, choosing diluted tones for the wool and intense hues for the polyester. Reflecting this, the colour scales in the collection combine subtle tones, such as grey and cream with highlight shades like rich red and azure blue. While distinctively individual, the designs share certain characteristics and colours. Each has a three-dimensional expression and features an interlocking pattern, which combines a highlight colour and a base hue. Consequently, they are ideal for mixing and matching. Thanks to their excellent flexibility and comfort, Canal, Moraine and Gravel are ideal for organically shaped furniture. They are suitable for retail and soft contract use.
